Prolonged Exposure for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Case Report

Abstract

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating illness to a lot of victims. Unfortunately, the standard guideline of treatment has not been established and the treatment outcome is not yet satisfactory. The imaginal exposure therapy is one of the psychotherapy which revealed effective for the reduction of avoidance and other symptoms, especially in patient with chronic PTSD. The relaxation training can be applied to reduce excessive anxiety during the imaginal exposure. Recently, we applied the imaginal exposure therapy to a male patient with chronic PTSD, and used biofeedback in order to reduce excessive anxiety. The combination of imaginal exposure therapy and biofeedback was effective in the treatment of his symptoms.
